Interesting. Apparently my no-longer-existent PayPal account is in danger of some sort of administrative nightmare. Riiiiiight.

Subject: Critical Information Regarding Your Account

Oooh, clever, did you notice the return address? Of course, the return path is different: vitamin101@vitamin101.com.tw What’s really interesting is that Gmail is usually very good about catching these and dumping them before they get to me, so these guys are doing something different.

[image with mouseover script] Dear PayPal User

Uh-huh. Because PayPal has lost the records of my irate flounce?

Due to the safety and integrity of the PayPal
account you have been notified with this message.

Because if we could just hack into the site, we wouldn’t need to phish for your password!

As a security measure your PayPal account information needs to be
updated in order to reduce the instance of unauthorized transactions on our website.
If you could please take 2 to 3 minutes out of your precious time and confirm your details you will not experience
further problems with the online service.

Some vague security measure we won’t explain enables your login to prevent unauthorized use of countless PayPal accounts. What’s more, it’ll solve all your problems with PayPal, ever. Amazing, isn’t it?

Once you have updated your account records your PayPal
services will not be interrupted and will get protected with additional security.

We won’t tell you what you’re supposed to be updating, though, and while we’re not explicitly saying services will be interrupted, we’re certainly hinting at it. You’re paying for protection, you know.

Delinkified because 1) I don’t want the search engine hit for linking to phishing sites, and 2) I don’t want to encourage anyone to go there. OTOH, if this helps anyone go after the creeps (LEGALLY - I don’t want to hear about any vigilante hacking), or if it helps someone avoid getting stung, then it’s served its purpose.
